Welcome to the Michigan State Video page.
Watch these videos and be inspired by ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
We begin with an interview of Nora Chahbazi, Founder of Evidence-Based Literacy Instruction (EBLI) and the Ounce Of Prevention Reading Center, in Flushing Michigan. Meet this incredible woman who out of necessity because one of her own daughters was unable to read, researched and then founded a new approach to reading (EBLI) which is transforming the way students in Michigan are learning to read. Students who otherwise were labeled "Disabled" or "Learning With Disabilities" are now able to read in often as little as twelve hours. Watch this video of a passionate mother who is making a difference in the lives of her children, as well as the children and adults in her community, in her state, and we are quite certain, soon the country. BE INSPIRED! One person truly can make a difference in the world.
50 In 52 Journey continues with an interview of Donna York, Nora Chahbazi, and Kathy Kujat. As a follow up to the Nora Chahbazi interview watch this video to hear how one mother used Evidence-Based Literacy Instruction (EBLI) to help her nine year old son learn to read after two years of failure to produce results by the school system, and listen to what a teacher says after a lifetime of teaching when she found EBLI and realized she never learned how to really teach reading. Real stories from real people benefiting from a new way to approach reading for children and adults who don't know how to read. Be inspired by what these people are doing in Michigan, and what you can do in your own state, your own community, your own family
Next we meet Lisa Jander, Author of Daters Ed and mentor. An incredible mom who 'accidentally' wrote a book on dating after her son got his drivers licence. Even more amazing is that "Mamma J" also mentors tennagers who have come to seek advice. Find out what "hall time" means and so much more as one woman is making a difference in the lives of kids in her community.
Our next stop in Michigan is Derek Blumke, Co-Founder and President of Student Veterans of America. Watch this video of a six year veteran of the Iraq/Afghanistan wars who came home and went to college only to find that colleges were not prepared to adequately help service members who were trying to become civilian students. Finding others in similar situations, Mr. Blumke decided to do something about it. Not only is Student Veterans of America now in campuses all across the country helping returning service members adjust to civilian life as students, but the organization is advocating for Veterans in Washington as well. Watch this inspiring video of a returning hero who has a passion for helping fellow service members and is making a difference in communities all across the country for those who have sacrificed so much so that we may enjoy our freedom.
Barbara Fulton is the Director of Community and Organizational Development. While many people listen to the stories about Michigan and the auto industry and fear the worst, this story is one that changes that picture. Watch this inspiring video of a community that not only wants to improve itself, but believes that by becoming "the most generous community in America" they can change the mindset of America and help move not simply their community forward, nor even their state forward, but move this country forward.
In Detroit Michigan we meet Terry Bean with Motor City Connect. A passionate man who started a community within a community. Many people know about the online communities of Linked In, Facebook, Twitter etc... What Terry did was take that concept one step further, by giving people a way to connect online, as well as face to face, and then finally connecting with the community. Listen to another citizen of Michigan who believes it's not what's happen around you but how you deal with what's happening that matters. A video full of wisdom, humor and help, be inspired by one man who is making a difference in his community and helping to truly move America forward.
We finish Michigan with Cardinal Mbiyu Chui, a man who was raised with giving back to his community as a foundation of his upbringing and who has been giving back to the various communities he has lived in ever since. Watch this video of a man who's schedule doesn't allow for a 2 hour window but nevertheless commits himself to tutoring a child in need all the while continuing to give back to his community in every way he can think of. Be inspired by one man who is moving his community and this country forward.
